It was announced in the second quarter of 2020 that a musical adaptation of the NBC TV series Smash is underway and destined for Broadway. Aired in 2012 and running for two seasons, Smash was about staging a Broadway musical revolving around Marilyn Monroe’s life. Some characters in the TV series will still be fundamental to the storyline, but the new musical’s plot will reportedly veer from the original.

Providing the score for the planned “Smash, A New Musical” is the Grammy and Tony award-winning tandem of Scott Wittman and March Shaiman, who also wrote more than two dozen original songs for the TV series. Many of these original songs in the TV show will also appear in the play. The powerhouse production team includes “Chicago” producer Neil Meron, chairman of WarnerMedia Entertainment Robert Greenblatt, and Steven Spielberg.
